Cusco is considered to be the oldest city in the Americas. Its name means “Navel of the World”. Many myths speak about its origin, but we know that the city existed prior to the Inca Empire. The Spanish arrived in Cusco in 1534. Cusco was the site of the first Catholic Archdiocese in South America. It was the crib of the Inca culture. In Colonial times, one of the most famous schools of art in the world, “The Cusquena (Cusco) School” was born here.
Cusco is located at 11,000 feet above sea level.
Urubamba is located 32 miles from Cuzco, in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Inca, between Machu Picchu and Pisac, principal fortresses that dominated this fertile valley. This agricultural center produced a wide variety of corn and all types of fruit. The Inca noble class used the valley as their country place of rest.
Constructed as the refuge of the highest Inca aristocracy, the fortress is located in the Eastern watershed of the Vilcanota Mountain Range, about 50 miles from Cuzco, the capital of the Empire. Its strategic geographic placement was chosen with admirable foresight. Surrounded by steep cliffs and hidden from sight in the thick jungle vegetation, Machu Picchu had only one narrow entrance, which allowed very few soldiers to defend it against a surpise attack.
